im not sure if i should be enjoying the poisonous manipulative hyper femininity of lana del rey really this much it is interesting you see her music that way because for me the main focus of her music has always been on abusive and shallow sexual relationships + harmful notions of masculinity and feminine sexuality. i basically read ultraviolence like a diary of a woman who cycles through harmful relationships with older men and can't escape. i mean the title track is a reference to a clockwork orange and presumably the infamous rape scene and it uses the line from the crystals 'it felt like a kiss' 'i can hear sirens, sirens he hit me and it felt like a kiss' very deliberately uses pop culture shorthand for abuse other tracks from the album too sad girl pretty when you cry the other woman billy-goated my way to the top and other references to depression, abuse and addiction throughout all her songs even going back to video games, that song very distinctly gave me the impression of an unhealthy, one-sided relationship so tbh i take issue with the idea of 'poisonous manipulative hyper femininity' in her music because i hear the exact opposite anyway i dont mean to sound like a dick but i kept thinking about what you said so i wanted to respond

i could talk about music all day but the music that has impressed me the most over the past two years has been fiona apple and unwound
it took me years to bother checking out both of them and i'm disappointed in myself for waiting but they quickly became staples of my music rotation
heres fiona covering elvis costello, i love the intensity of this. her original work is fantastic but her covers are consistently top notch.
and here is my favourite unwound track - though it doesnt quite do them justice to listen to this alone. theyre definitely an album band.
