'Cept they really didn't and it might have lead to his death? Was this common knowledge and I just had no clue? www.nytimes.com/2013/07/28/magazine/should-reddit-be-blamed-for-the-spreading-of-a-smear.html?ref=magazine&_r=1&pagewanted=all&TL;DR After the release of the photos of the suspects, a redditor points out a similarity between one of the bombers and a missing man/boy from new york named Sunil Tripathi. He recognized him from a facebook page Sunils family made to find him, as they suspected he was still alive, just in a poor and depressed state of mind. From there reddit took charge and started posting anti-muslim shit allllll over the page. (the family isn't muslim) So, they decide to delete the page, afraid that Sunil might see the things being said about him. They do this around the same time that the MIT officer was shot. So that leads to more speculation. ABC starts calling the family. Then NBC. And after someone spreads the rumor that Sunil Tripathi was identified as the second suspect on a police scanner (His name was never said on the recordings) just about every major news outlet is calling the family demanding answers and sending out tweets of their own. After the real bombers are caught, the family has no way of trying to find Sunil because the private investigations business that they were using was ruined by all the speculation that Sunil was a terrorist. Not too long after, they find his body floating in a river. Nice work internet police. They ruined multiple peoples lives for something based on nothing but grainy pictures. Oh and those major news outlets did some excellent work finding the sources of all these bullshit reports. billy-goat.

also when they found the guy I believe they had determined he had died before the bombings even took place, so his death isn't "reddits" fault.
but the whole aftermath of that reddit witch hunt is still absolutely gross.

Many times some redditor is forced to post "okay guys quit it with the witch hunt before you do something stupid" and every time that happens some guy pipes up "but but what are we supposed to do with our torches and pitchforks now" and chuckles quietly to his own brilliant joke

reddit is disgusting bc the administrators allow things to go on like this in some white knight defense of "free speech" when free speech actually does NOT cover hate speech in the least such as ppl posting anti muslim things to this guys family and also the fact that they allowed it to go on to the point where his death being related to reddit was even suspected is disgusting im sure it was brought to their attention

not to mention not shutting down racist and sexist subreddits, like when that guy wrote a book on how to rape women and thought it was ok bc it was super popular on reddit
