A BRIEF HISTORY IN DOOM by grue
PART ONE: PAVING THE WAY
first there was SABBATH (the gods the legend the dream)
Black Sabbath pretty much started the whole thing. They took the distorted sounds from rock and in Iommi's rifftastic hands they became a headbanging powerhouse. Iommi's chord progressions and solos added to a groovy tempo that sways nicely with the theme of heavy drug use are such a staple that you can find these riffs in contemporary metal all around. And of course let's not forget Ozzy. Ozzy was (well, is) a walking bucket of alcohol, psychedelics and hard drugs (heroin, cocaine). The songs drift from the sort of rock'n'rollish living life in the fast lane kinda groove you can hear in Paranoid, or the slow, extended riffs from Iron Man. Talking about satanism, sex, euphoria and self-destruction.
Why is this important? This is very important, because noone was making music like this, it was a novel thing that was quickly adopted by fans of rock'n'roll looking for that extra push. Which means that bands would come and pick up on it. Two notable examples are:
Pentagram fused the groovy high of psyrock, the sort of "lighter side" of Black Sabbath, mixing with recent (80's) riffalicious ideas coming from Led Zeppelin & co. But framing in terms of "I'm drunk and high and this will be me tomorrow, until I die". Heroin was queen in the 80's and also the onset of chemical drugs like speed was seeping into the underground music meta. Saint Vitus slowed the tempo even further and dragged the sound down to the hellhole of a life of alcoholism and codeine. Themes like depression and self-loathing matched with an unseen emphasys on low key, minimalist tunes.
The music that was informally referred to as "stoner rock" (not to be confused with modern day stoner, I'll get to that later) because of its continuous references to drug abuse and dependance, became known as "doom", because of its apocalyptic imagery. Sex, drugs, rock'n'roll and self-destruction.

so ive been listening to all the shit you guys posted more and its growing on me a little even though its so fu ckin nerd tryhard. more specifically that candlemass song. fu cking makes me laugh. that is probably about 90% of all metal bands I have listened to I hate it at first but give it more listens and it grows on me, usually getting past the vocals and appreciating the instrumental work bar a few which I loved off the first listen but thats just me

PART TWO: CLASSIC DOOM
Doom was never as much of a "big" scene. The subculture is ridden with substance abuse and is not comprised of the most friendly bunch. It's self-deprecating often, and is very much inspired on enjoying the music by yourself, inviting you to take from the music what you want. Concerts are very individualized, and even if you go there with friends, normally the audience is fragmented (there is no moshing, no talking, just people drunk/high enjoying the sound. It did gather a cult of sorts, though, and the "movement" branched into what I will consider four main subsets: classic doom, doom metal, minimalist doom and sludge.
Classic doom is pretty much comprised of bands that never left the early roots of rock distorted guitars in the wake of pentagram and saint vitus. You've seen Candlemass, but there's also bands like Cathedral
Saint Vitus and Pentagram still play to this day, and a lot of minor bands still follow the style. The genre often blends itself with what is today considered "stoner rock", because the roots are pretty much the same.
Another very important reference in this style is early Sleep:
Any self-respecting "stoner" band from today that doesn't listen to the Holy Mountain album is not self-respecting at all. This album is a masterpiece. Sleep would evolve into what is considered now "Doom Metal" (this album has metal elements already) with their album Dopesmoker, which came in the late 90's.
