i made a big long post about this and i bring it up all the time because im a braggart:
i used to frequent /vp/ and for a time i was in charge of managing surveys in the /vp/ makes a game threads. this was when they were surveying names, concepts, finalizing, art, etc. i stopped because people who did all the work didnt get an opinion (i barely did work so im not talking about me) and people that did no work wanted all of the opinions (also not me, i didnt care that much). it wasnt called pokemon sage at this point, just "the game" or whatever. there were a lot of great people and i honestly never thought theyd come together to get this far. i hope for the best, i cant wait for them to finish it so i can see how far they really got. my favorite pokes from the dex are loneleaf and forthorn
my only lasting marks on the project are the names for Cerebrulb and Trenchula. anyway if you have questions AMA

Ohhh yeahh I remember your post about this! it's too bad that people doing the work didn't get a voice. I guess that's the cost of a purely democratic process. But truly I don't know anything about its development and how you guys planned stuff out.
So if you want an AMA... Can you describe the development process of the game?

okay, uh- initially it was just going to be a pokedex. they were only ever interested in making a fun group of 'mons that had cool concepts and so on but it snowballed from there. the initial process was, someone would draft a concept for something ("hey what if we had a guy who was like, part tree part elephant yeah here is what he could look like") and then it would get voted on. they could vote yes, induct the concept and design OR induct the concept but not the design OR get rid of all of it.
most of the time, the concept would get through and artists would come give their "take" on it. designs would be whittled down to "should the horns be forward or backward", "should the colors be red then black or black then red", etc. little details. that would get voted on until the final product would be "sugi'd" into a final design. sugi-> ken sugimori, the guy who does all the nice looking old style pokemon designs.
most stuff had to be approved at 66% of the vote. if enough people voted "yeah i like it but its not perfect", it would be sent back into design hell and get stuck there, never reaching 66%. people would never settle for their second favorite, meaning there would always be enough people who liked a thing but not enough people who liked one SPECIFIC thing and so it would get stuck. then we started talking about a purge- to cull designs that were going nowhere. i was VERY against this because the obvious solution was just to lower the approval threshhold, or to give different weights to the choices or have people pick more than one. i gave up before this got solved but i notice now looking at the dex that nobody got culled so i guess it worked out

this extended to names. this was really fun to parse for me, it's what i worked on the most. some names were just obvious. for example, that aurora borealis hog was named Boarealis immediately in the thread and there really didnt need to be a poll. there was a HUGE debacle over the fire starter evo Kidling and pounther, whose original name was Kitling. before you could even discuss alternatives, people were arguing over which would be changed and so on. i think it was decided by the honchos that that wouldnt be voted on, that pounther was the one that would definitely get changed
names would get submitted to a pool and then bad jokes or stupid stuff would get filtered out. then thered be another vote for which won. i was in charge of deciding by how large of a margin a winner got made, and sometimes youd have to vote a few times before it was a clear enough gap
that was often a problem as well, where people wouldnt understand the concept behind a thing so theyd not cast an educated enough vote. there was some rock kobold thing that like 2 people understood and i still have no idea what was up with that

Do you mean Kobalt? Cobalt is some metal found in rocks.
Do you think the project is in danger of legal action from Pokemon?

Do you think the project is in danger of legal action from Pokemon? yeah its like, rocks and kobolds so cobalt and kobold but i dont know what a kobold is mythologically yes i do think that will happen if it gets far enough in. if theres a big hunky demo and a lot of people get a hold of it then yes but that would be sad
