how are republican/democratic candidates selected like is there a separate election for that and can anyone vote i guess not bcuz there'd be a hilarious amount of sabotage votes

so the idea is this- there are parties, and each party selects their "head" to go into the big presidential pool
depending on where you live, to pick who gets the democratic nomination you need to be registered as a member of their cabal and then you pick who (or similar for republican)
because we live in what is essentially a two-party state, that just means you two people go against another
in some places you can vote for anyone in the primary without registering for a party first, but i live in new york and this is not the case. those are open primaries and ours is closed

heres whats kinda billy-goated up though- if you want to feel the bern but hate women like me, you can (could have) register(ed) as a democrat to vote for colonel sanders but then youre a member of the democratic party now and if hillary gets the nomination and you do nothing, hillary gets your vote in the big bad election
so you have to put yourself down as a democrat and then take it back if your guy (or gal (or ze)) doesnt make it through which is scummy
