Piracy

I read an article once that had a fancy graphic of how piracy had dropped across different medias (film, games, music etc) as cheaper, and more importantly, more CONVENIENT means of aquiring such things began to appear. Netflix and spotify both had a huge impact upon piracy because, as others have alluded to, it's more conveneient and much cheaper.
Personally, I pirate almost nothing thesedays.
Films/tv? Either i'll watch streams on twitch or netlix or BBC iPLayer or a whole boatload of other things.
Music? Spotify
Games? Steam. ezpz.

my stance hasn't changed much, i don't have much disposable income so ill always pirate something before buying it. but if i like it, i buy it when i can. this applies to almost everything except for relatively unknown/local bands who usually have stuff up on bandcamp for a dollar or for free, i try to support them as much as possible because it feels like im actually supporting the creators that way. i feel like this is what most people do especially with the extremely prevalent multiplayer aspects of games, i don't know many people that pirate things with no intent to buy them later, it just comes down to shit like when a game costs 60 dollars, people need to make absolutely sure they like it first See I feel this, but I have friends who while they share the stance in theory, in practice what I see is that they will pirate what they can (music and games mostly) and buy what they can't download (say diablo 3 and WoW). I do tell them it's lame of them to not buy some albums or games for th sake of it, but at the same time I understand that really that's it, it's for the sake of it, like you say buying the game is pretty much throwwing money at the developer because you already have the game itself. I can't really wrap my mind around that. On the one hand, I don't really care that they pirate (I really don't 99% of the time), on the other hand when the subject comes up I can't stop myself from criticising the attitude of just paying shit when you're forced to. This is a problem because this is coherent with the idea that restricting piracy incentivizes actually buying the product. So in a sense I'm ok with piracy but in another sense I am not. I really don't reconcile the two perspectives most of the time. I'm ok with what *I* do, but that doesn't translate well with how I deal with my friends on this subject. makes sense as long as you admit that you don't really try to reconcile the perspectives. i get a little mad when people pirate like an actual indie game just to try it out but never end up buying it, making games is expensive, i like to help out developers when i can. but if it's like a big name game like assassins creed or something then im not super bothered. i personally will usually wait for something to go on sale even if i do like it a lot, but again, limited finances and all that. i feel like the multiplayer aspect of 99% of recent games is at least in part to discourage piracy. i can't think of any other reason it would be in mass effect 3 for example, but they didn't do it very well. i think the souls games actually do a decent part of implementing multiplayer to discourage piracy but that's definitely not a model that would work for every game. but like, no one pirates souls games because even if you're someone like me that doesn't really care for online multiplayer it's a huge aspect of the game that only improves it and makes it worth the money

When I was young and poor I pirated everything and anything, I just couldn't afford to get the retail games, music, or movies at the price point they had them at.
Now that I actually have a good amount of disposable income I rarely, if ever pirate anything. Movies mostly because I don't want to pay for a movie that sucks, but if I like the movie I'll go out and get it on Blu ray.
The biggest problem for me now is space, I have 4 shelves of games and 2 shelves of movies and books, there's almost no more room for me to keep expanding my collection.

The funny thing about vinyl that I've noticed is people say they love the sound of vinyl and how much better it is but have a shit setup with a terrible turntable that sounds like complete ass, like sorry man but your 100 dollar Walmart special turntable that doesn't let you change your cartridge is not making your goo goo dolls album pop more than a CD.
I also collect vinyl.

I also collect vinyl. I can hardly justify buying vinyl without a proper analog sound system and that's expensive as billy-goat though I understand CDs are a terrible format, mostly because their average lifespan under proper storage conditions (ie not mine) is like 30-40 years (10 if they're the cheap ones), they say if you want a good quality/price ratio you should definitely choose digital over analog heck, many publishers are recording in digital and then converting to analog when pressing vinyl, just because there are people who will buy it. what I've read on the subject says the sound quality can only be worse than if it came in CD form I do get buying vinyl, though, it's a beautiful object

i haven't pirated music since spotify, and youtube is tons better now so i use that for stuff not on spotify
i guess it's because i listen to a lot more music on the go now though. i used to pirate when i listened to it on my computer.
i always watch sport on streams though and that's pretty much every single week i'll watch at least a few games, because there's no steam/spotify type service for online sports that isn't a) complete dog shit and b) ridiculously expensive
