I'm trying to wrap my head around that but I don't think my ostrich sized brain is capable of such a thing. so you're saying if there's nothing random, then there can't be free will?
EDIT: are you also saying if there is nothing random then there has to be a god? I'm pretty confused

maybe if im a crybaby champion you should read into the Gallipoli Campaign to understand how horrific your people had it during one of the worst wars known to man maybe after reading that you'll understand the feeling of resentment anyone would have after that war

If you were destined to be a certain way that would imply some kind of god or creator or higher power or whatever, and I find it hard to believe in those things, so yes I be leive in free will. You're free to make any decision you choose to yet ultimately your choice will come down to what you rationalize as the best course of action. You're not making a "free" choice you're making what you determine to be the "best" choice. What you decide will be influenced by your genetic make up, your environment, your experiences etc. Many of these things are largely out of your control. The idea is that if someone was exposed to the same variables then they would act in the same way and reach the same decisions. Which is what was meant by "pre determined." It's not nothing to do with destiny.

EDIT: are you also saying if there is nothing random then there has to be a god? I'm pretty confused I always liked to think of true free will as something that would allow you to make different choices if you were to repeat a certain period of time: say you have to make a decision apparently based on nothing, maybe you had to choose what you were going to have for breakfast and you just chose at random, not really thinking about it. If you turned back time in a way that everything is exactly the same (meaning you don't remember any time travelling), you would always make the same decision, everything would happen exactly the same way, unless there are actually random stuff happening at an elemental level that could slightly change how your brain works and end up choosing something different. If there is nothing random, there either is a higher power that controls these things or the Universe is a sad sad place.
