Why do you do poetry

I don't know.

Used to be i wrote a lot and poetry is like bite sized chunks of my writing to throw at people.

Now it's all i do. I love being able to paint with words. I love exploring the nooks and crannies that make the language so beautiful. There is a singular beauty in having an entire room of people listen in absolute silence to something you have written. Not out of politeness, like in a speech or a debate or something. Because they're genuinely listening to you. I realised how rare it was that people actually listen to each other, normally everyone's just waiting for their turn to speak (fight club reference). Poetry allows me to actually communicate with someone, and have someone actually communicate with me.

And also because I think I'm good at it. it gives me genuine pleasure to write something, especially something beautiful. And it gives me more pleasure when other people appreciate it. Life is a pageant and a parade where everyone is judged solely on what they contribute to society. I want to contribute some form of beauty to it. I want that to be what I'm remembered for.
