Yes. You.
Stop scrolling through Spame
Or looking around the room
Wondering who I’m talking about
I’m talking to you.
You are beautiful.
And you’re not told that often enough.
I know it gets hard sometimes.
I know ups and downs can mean trebuchets and freefalls
I’ve been there too
And all your molehills can look like mountains
When the world makes you feel ant small
And fountains can dance from your eyes when you know there’s no-one watching
I know.
I know sometimes the world can hang from your shoulders
Like a cloak made of boulders
And while everyone else seems to use their capes to fly
It can take seventeen tries to make it upright
Under the weight of a concrete soul
I know sometimes you feel like you don’t deserve to cry
Like the problems you’re dealing with in your life
Are as pathetic as you are
Like adulthood is a test you never passed
And all the lessons seem to have passed you by
I know that sometimes the worst part of it is the guilt
You feel like you’re not entitled to your sadness
That every tear and sigh is a failure
Dripping out of you
I know that you feel like you’re dragging most of the weight of you
Beneath the surface
Iceberg vast and jagged
That sometimes you panic
When someone gets too near
That if they don’t steer clear
You’ll rip holes in their heart
Break open their steel plating
And sink them
You wonder why we keep coming back.
It’s because we love you.
Yes, ‘we’
I think you’re incredible
I know you are
Because you’re here
You’re here and you’re making it
And it takes every part of me to be half the things that you are
You are breathtaking
Not just the gleaming surface
I know about the parts that persevere beneath an ocean of waves
They amaze me even more
Because mine are smaller
And they still weigh me down
You are giant
Turning the biggest and the worst of my concerns
Into mounds overturned
By a flick of your foot
You are flying forever
Boulders, feather-light on your back
I am struck earth-bound by how strong you are
And your tears are heartbreaking
But they’re yours
You don’t need to explain them to anyone
But if you ever have to share them with someone
You’re not burdening that person
You are trusting them
It’s the most precious gift you can give.
So cry
Cry until your smile shines through the tears and blinds us with rainbows
Because I absolutely promise that you will be alright
You are shining too bright to fade
And I mean every word, every sound, every letter
You are loved
You’re amazing
And things do get better.
